Research Description
A major goal in our laboratory is to understand the biochemical and immunological interactions between the intracellular protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi and its mammalian hosts. Trypanosoma cruzi is the hemoflagellate that causes Chagas' disease. It is endemic in South and Central American, with reports of confirmed cases in the US. In chronic Chagas' disease the major pathology is associated with destruction of cardiac tissue. How the pathology is established is still a controversial issue. Both parasite-driven and autoimmune-driven phenomena are considered in the literature. While studies are currently being conducted in my laboratory using mouse model systems, Chagasic patients from on-site locations in Brazil are used for a better understanding of the human aspects of pathology.

Specifically we are investigating: A) the immune regulation during chronic Chagas' disease in humans mediated by idiotypic and anti-idiotypic cells and antibodies; B) the mechanisms of pathogenesis during chronic Chagas' disease using PCR and in situ PCR technologies; and C) chemotherapy of Chagas' disease using in vitro and in vivo models to evaluate potential trypanosidal drugs.
