Research Description
My major interests are in understanding how epithelial cells of the surface ectoderm can form many different appendages, how this capability is altered in the adult organism, how this relates to malignant transformation of epithelial stem cells in the course of tumorigenesis, and how human primary keratinocytes can be genetically engineered for gene therapy purposes. In particular I am interested in the role of Dicer and microRNAs in squamous epithelial carcinogenesis.
Additionally, Dicer has important functions in the control of the epigenome by regulating the formation and maintenance of heterochromatin. Therefore, another aspect of my research interest is to determine how changes in the epigenome during lifetime affect aging and susceptibility to diseases like cancer.
